Torrey Pines
Located on the southern area of Del Mar and bordering the seaside town of La Jolla is the Torrey Pines State Reserve, one of two undeveloped areas south of Los Angeles. The reserve is home to the Torrey Pines Golf Course, Los Penasquitos marsh and lagoon, many nature trails, and miles of beaches and natural landscape.
The rarest pine tree of North America, the Torrey pine, lives in this densely wooded area. Residents have splendid views of the ocean while hiking and bird watching. Because of strict restrictions on housing and business developments, many people live in the Del Mar Terraces or Del Mar Heights neighborhoods. However, there are a few homes in this area overlooking the estuary that are nestled into the natural surroundings.
The community has received a great deal of media attention because of golf enthusiasts. The Torrey Pines Golf Complex hosts the annual Buick Invitational while the south course was host to the 2008 U.S. Open.
